We started at the Cayman Turtle Centre (as it is now known) and had a look at the turtles – it is not breeding season so no little babies there. You can’t pick them up like you used to be able to but they have touch tanks now so the kids spent a little time doing that before we moved around to the snorkel pond.

Mark and the kids all snorkeled while I sat and enjoyed the sun in peace and quiet. They saw quite a lot of fish and some turtles so they were happy. We then wandered around to the pool and water slide and cooled off.

When everyone had had enough, we drove up to Hell. Its name comes from a group of short, black, limestone formations located in the area. Its eerie and rather sinister look is what gave it its infamous name. The kids sent themselves a postcard from the Hell post office – I wonder how long it will take to arrive.

A quick stop at Fosters for a few essentials, some lunch and ice cream and we headed home to eat our lunch. We went into the town centre as Greer wanted a Cayman Islands top so we toured the souvenir stores and all got something.

Back home we swam in the pool (freezing cold as they don’t heat the pools here) and the ocean and soaked up the sun for a few hours and watched the sunset before having a rest back at the apartment.

We had booked dinner at Agua at Camana Bay for 8pm which was perfect timing as the family fireworks display was also at 8pm so we had a great spot, even if the trees were slightly obscuring the view. Camana Bay was heaving when we got there, with families all settled in for the display. Agua had a set menu for New Years Eve and the kids had the option of that or the children’s menu but we all opted for the bigger menu. The courses came thick and fast to start with so we asked them to slow them down, otherwise we would have been home by 8:30. The food was really good and the kids gave everything a go (except for the oysters which TJ and Greer wouldn’t try but Sophia had 2 of them). All in all it was an enjoyable meal in a great location.

We headed home to bed and didn’t stay up to see the new year in – we must be getting old …?
