Day 18 – DUMBO, Subway rides, Shopping and Queueing

This morning we stopped in at Max Brenner’s at the Bryant Park Market for a quick hot chocolate and wander around the market before catching the subway (despite protests from the kids that it was dodgy – not at all) down to Brooklyn and the area know as DUMBO (Down under the Manhattan Bridge Underpass) for some iconic photos looking back at Manhattan. We had a coffee to warm up and decided against walking back across the Brooklyn Bridge as it was just too cold. Instead we headed back to the subway via a couple of stores on the way.

We caught the subway up to SOHO (South of Houston) and onto Bloomingdale’s as there was a jacket I had seen on sale that I wanted to check out. I stayed with the girls and looked around Bloomingdales and Mark and TJ headed towards a sports card shop via Nike. They hadn’t made it out of Nike by the time we caught up with them. A few stores and hours later, Mark said he knew somewhere we could go to eat.

We turned up at Tap Burger to be told by the people waiting outside (one group) that it would be an hour wait. Initially we were like no way but when the kids saw the kind of milkshakes you could get there we decided to wait. The girls and I stood in the queue and Mark & TJ did the 15 minute walk to the card shop, shopped and Ubered back to join us in the queue. By this stage we had been waiting for prob a good 45 minutes. 1.5 hours since we first lined up, the first group went in. We could see in the window (and they could see us as well) and there seemed to be empty tables. When the old guy came out to take the group in front of us in, he yelled their name. To cut a long story short, we were supposed to put our name down. No one had told us, even though the group in front of us clearly knew this to be the case and happily told us the wait time and the old guy inside could clearly see there was a queue and not enough names on the list. The old guy inside eventually agreed to take our name and it wasn’t long until we got a table. It was a ridiculous situation as everyone else behind us in the queue was also in the same boat.

Once inside and started to slowly defrost we got our food and everyone was happy. The burgers were good, although not sure I could honestly say they were worth waiting that long for. The shakes were very impressive and a meal in themselves.

After what was originally going to be a late lunch and turned into an early dinner, we headed back to the hotel. I then took Sophia up to Lululemon on 5th Avenue as she wanted to get a top printed with the NY skyline. After a lot of looking around and trying to make decisions and a quick stop at Sephora, we headed back and got our bags packed up.
